Torino, Italia

Damilia took the morning shift from 08:00 to 9:30. Then Mary and I met her at The Place for a coffee and brioche. The goal this morning was to visit The National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento (Museo nazionale del Risorgimento italiano) is the first, the biggest and the most important among the 23 museums in Italy dedicated to the Risorgimento; and the only one which can be considered "national" according to a 1901 law, and due to its rich and great collections. It is housed in the Palazzo Carignano.

The museum was established in 1878, shortly after Italian unification, even though it only had its first permanent exhibition in 1908. Originally located in the Mole Antonelliana, in 1938 it was moved to its current site (which had previously housed the Subalpine Chamber of Deputies, from 1848 to 1860, and then the first Italian Chamber of Deputies, from 1861 to 1865).

Its exhibits include weapons, flags, uniforms, printed and written documents (including the original manuscript of the song Il Canto degli Italiani, dated 10 November 1847 by Goffredo Mameli, now Italian national anthem since 1946), and artworks. The new exhibition, which opened on 18 March 2011, occupies about 3500 square meters across 30 rooms, and covers the real Risorgimento period, stretching from the late 18th century revolutions to the beginning of the First World War. It includes a specialized library, a print cabinet and a documentary archive.

Wow, it is neat. Unfortunately, due to an electrical problem only 17 rooms were open. Of course, they didn’t bother to mention this when we bought our tickets. And we didn’t actually find out until we were in room 17. We walked back out disappointed after having spent two and a half hours immersing ourselves in Italian History. We managed to get up to the unification of Italy in 1861 before the rooms ran out.

On the way out Damilia went and gave the ticket office a piece of her mind. Apparently, it was a good piece because they gave us free tickets to return next week and see the other rooms when they are open. Way to go Damilia.

We stopped at a place on Via Po for a little lunch. We got a pizza, beer and soft drink. It was ok, but it was clearly a student hangout. Quality wasn’t something they worry about. A beer, a soft drink and 12” pizza were 4 Euros. What did one expect for 4 Euros?

After lunch we headed back to the apartment and took a rest. In the afternoon we went back to Serra and Pietro’s. Played with Lulu and Amadea. Filled in between when Gloria leaves at 18:00 and the night nurse comes at 19:30. Afterwards we returned to the apartment for the night.

A nice day. Ciao, Enrico e Maria
