Well, it is the fourth Thursday in November, that’s right Thanksgiving Day. Well, it is just another Thursday in Italy. For obvious reasons they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here. However, those who have had the American experience do try and celebrate it. That is what we did.
It is a little different. Getting a turkey for Thanksgiving is a problem in Italy. Turkey isn’t a big thing here and getting a whole turkey is nearly unheard of. Maybe for Christmas, but in November? There are no cranberries. Well, that isn’t completely true.
They do grow cranberries here, but they aren’t the same varietal that is grown in the US. They are smaller. You can find dried cranberries in the supermarket, although I have yet to find any. Apparently, they are occasional used in panettone and other holiday breads. Now, in Vienna, they serve cranberry sauce with Wiener schnitzel. It is a good combination.
Anyway, we celebrated Thanksgiving with Serra and family at her house. We had all the normal American Thanksgiving foods. Turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes (called American potatoes here), green beans, stuffing (corn bread), gravy, apple and pumpkin pie. There was the Panna, discussed yesterday. And yes, it is probably the best whipped cream. How or why I don’t know.
After stuffing ourselves with food, we sat around and tried to recover. Eventually we headed back to our apartment. Mary and played a game of cards in an effort to stay awake until at least 9. It worked out ok.
Looks like Chrissy and Stuart are backing out of Africa. Now we have to deal with whatever effect that will have on us. Hoping not much. We are still going, and going to Morocco as well. Maybe even Prague too. Well see.
