Again, another Day at SEA
Somewhere closer to Hawaii
In the North Pacific Ocean
Yes, another day at sea. It is clearer this morning but still rock-n-rolling. Shockingly someone beat me to the laundry room this morning. 7:03 in the morning, three minutes after it supposedly opened, there was someone using “my” washer. Fortunately, there are only two loads this morning, so the other two machines in the laundry room were available.
Using the new soap sheets as detergent instead of that supplied by the ship, the two available machines were loaded, started and the laundry was on its way to getting clean. Down to the coffee connection for a morning cappuccino and brioche during the wash cycle. Walking back to the laundry room it was apparent, although things weather wise, were looking up, the captain was still expecting rough seas. The upper floor with the jogging track was still closed. The walkway on the 6th floor was still closed.
Changed over the laundry, remembering to bring the dryer sheets with me, before going back to the room to see if Mary needed anything. She was still sleeping so I went and had a cigar while clothes were in the dryer. After forty-five minutes headed back to the laundry room. Mary’s things were dry, but mine were still very wet. Restarted my clothes and then folded and took Mary’s to our suite.
It was just going nine when I got back, Mary was up and getting dressed. We headed up to La Veranda for breakfast. Having fresh fruit at your disposal, all cut up and ready to eat, is really nice. They do also make a mean hand and cheese omelette. Mary had a poached egg on an English muffin, which looked really good.
After breakfast stopped by the laundry room and checked on my things. They were still too wet to fold. We went back to the suite and worked on getting the 1099’s for the office filed. Boy is satellite internet slow …. Gathered all the information for the 1099’s but couldn’t get on the filing site. Probably everyone else is trying to get their 1099’s filed by by deadline Wednesday.
Checked the laundry room again before heading up to lunch. My things were dry, so I took them out and folded them and headed back to the room to meet Mary for lunch. La Veranda was having a curry themed lunch. Sounded great in theory, I like a good curry. Unfortunately there wasn’t any good curry to be had. Ok, saves carlories. They did haved a lemon grass chocolate brownie. Not sure where the lemon grass was…. The brownies were fairly good, a bad thing, too many carlories.
So it was back to the room to try and file the 1099s. No luck still not able to sign in to the filing site. Time for another cigar. It had just gone 16:00 when I got back to the suite and tried the filing site again. This time it was possible to login. Probably because it was after five everywhere in the US except Hawaii and Alaska. Got the 1099s filed for which we had all the information. Two still waiting on data.
Got dressed for the 18:00 Seven Seas Cocktail Party. Tomorrow we will arrive in Lihue, actually the Nawiliwili, Kauai cruise terminal, at 08:00. In 1967 I attended summer school at Kauai High School. Took classes in photograph. Worked with the drama students at the theatre in Lihue. The drama coach was none other then Richard Boone from the TV series “Have Gun will Travel”. He was the main character “Paladin”. Use to watch the show a lot.
Apparently, Richard Boone was injured in a car accident in 1963 from which he never really recovered. He appeared quite often to not be sober. It was a bit let down. After all he was a Star on TV. He left Hawaii in 1970 and moved to Flordia. Very sad, he was a great actor. Oh, he acted in several more shows and movies after the accident, but his acting was never the same for me.
In 1967 Kauai was a sleepy island. Lihue None of the North Shore or West Shore was even much developed. There were only about 30,000 people on Kauai in 1967. It has doubled since then, but the tourist trade has really taken off. Many hotels and Condos. There was very little in 1967. There may or may not have been an incident of acquiring pineapples directly from the field near school. There may also have been a incident which involved cutting and eating sugar cane from another nearby field. The high school has since been replaced with stone/concrete building. It was just a series of repurposed military barracks from WWII in 1967. Fond memories!
The Silver Seas Society Party really wasn’t much. More of just another opportunity to promote the brand and try to make us feel good about what we spent on this trip. Honestly how can you not feel good about it? It is fun. Yes, there is a little sea sickness to deal with, but if one were in a high end assisted living center on land there would be some issue there was well. So, no complaints.
After the party we went down to the Compass Rose for a simple dinner. Salad and a baked potato. The wait staff does have some trouble understanding our eating routine. But all we wanted was a light simple dinner. Actually Mary got soup and I have a salad. They brought us each a bowl with two baked potatoes in each bowl. Really that is too much.
Looking forward to being on dry land soon. The sea sickness has subsided. The weather is still a little unsettled. Cloudy and a little drizzle from time to time. There are still the winds. They may have been good news for the sailors in the age of sail, but now it just means unsettled seas.
Buonanotte e ciao, Enrico
