Torino, Italy

Working on getting up at 08:30 and hitting the street. We managed it again this morning and walked over to The Palace for our cappuccino and brioche. Mary didn’t find what she wanted at the Sephora. It was a small store. So we decided to walk to Sephora on Via Roma.

Via Roma is one of the main shopping streets in the historic center of Torino. It connects Piazza Castello to Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and includes Piazza C.L.N. and Piazza San Carlo along its route, ending in Piazza Carlo Felice. Let’s see what you can recall about the rectangular street grid of the typical Roman city plan. Remember the decumanus? Remember that the center of town is here the Decumanus Maximus and Cardo Maximus  crossed? Well Via Roma runs parallel to Cardo Manimus, which today is known as Via San Tomasso. Just a couple blocks west, and runs north-south.

We walk to Piazza Madama, and from there enter Via Roma. One of the nice things about Via Roma is that for all intents and purposes it is a pedestrian street. There are cars but they generally stay way from it because there is so much foot traffic. Someone by now is asking what C.L.N. Stands for. If you find out let me know.

We got to Sephora. It was packed. The store is huge, but they still didn’t;t have what Mary was looking for. For some reason she thought that Rinacente, a Macy’s like department store in Italy, would have it. So, we headed in that direction, more or less.

Somewhat focused on finding a place to eat, I got very turned around. We ended up on a short street Via Buozzi. We found the Starbucks, but avoided that. We walked a little further and found a place called Vinperfocaccia. A very small shop amount several others. They specialized in, you guessed it, focaccia. Mary got the “classic” – prosciutto cotto artigianale, lettuce, and hand made mayonnaise. I got the “Parma” – which was prosciutto crudo di Parma D.O.P., crema di parmigiano (36 mesi), e aceto balsamico. Both were very good.

We then walked on to Rinacente. Success! Mary found what she was looking for. We made our purchase and made a bee-line back to the apartment for a nap. At 18:30 we met Lulu and her parents in front of their apartment. Now I have to admit to a mistake. Tonight we went to SoHo for are aperitivo. The night before we actually went back to the Gran Madre neighborhood for an aperitivo. Sorry, got confused trying to catch up.

So, the night before we walked back to the Gran Madre Church and on the east side of the church walked down a pedestrian street, Via Monferrato. We stopped at one place but they didn’t open until 19:30. We walked a little further and stopped at Cucina di Damasco. Pietro ordered a bottle of wine, and believe it or not, it came from the restaurant that closed. Funny. We had some nice dishes and then walked back to Lulu’s apartment. Now that that has been corrected, we’ll resume the tail.

We went back to Lulu’s on Saturday night, and Pietro made risotto alla Milanese. We spent some time talking and cleared the table. It was past our bedtime so it was time to go home. We walked back and went to bed.

Buonanotte e ciao, Enrico e Maria
